Project 1

Client: J. M. Martinac Shipyard (for Signet Maritime)

Tug: “America” and
“Stars & Stripes”

The first of two new DEPCF-52S Electric Hawser Winches began service on board the high performance tug America. Owned by Signet Maritime and chartered by Foss Maritime, this distinctive new tug can be seen around the Seattle waterfront. Tug America and her sister Stars & Stripes are 30 meter, 6,600 BHP tugs outfitted with advanced Z-drives delivering 80 tons bollard pull and 13+ knots running speed. Developed by Signet in conjunction with Robert Allan, LTD and dubbed the AZ 30/80, the design for this vessel considers ship assist, escort, fire fighting, coastal towing and rig move services. With a special escort-duty level wind, the DEPCF-52S Electric Hawser supports ship-assist and escort operations using the tug’s oversized fore-deck staple.

Markey’s supply of two Class II+ Hawser Winches includes wheelhouse automatic Render/Recover and deck mounted controls, 75 HP variable frequency drive panel to regulate motor speed, and both analog and digital line tension displays. The DEPCF-52S spools 750 feet of 10 inch circumference soft line absorbing the 335 tons braking tensions. A 75 HP motor produces maximum line pulls of 46,000 lbs. and light line payout speeds of 375 ft/ min. A special escort-duty level wind system fitted with faired stainless contact surfaces enables the cable to spool properly in the available fore-deck area. Like the Tug America’s DEPCF-52S, electric hawser winches in this class feature an integral Markey-developed Integrated Winch Display-Line Monitor System.

The America’s Integrated Winch Display-Line Monitor System is complete with rugged computer hardware running Windows CE operating system, LCD touch-sensitive screen, and custom menu driven software to setup, monitor, operate and maintain the winch system. The system’s industrial computer includes a USB communications port for connecting peripherals like a thumb drive memory unit. An Ethernet (RJ45) communications port connects a laptop computer or other compatible device performing service and diagnostic functions of the system’s electronics or for uploading tension data for off-line analysis. The compact size and included wire less mouse interface make it possible to install the display in unused wheelhouse space.

The Windows operating environment, installed productivity applications, and menu-driven custom software are instantly familiar to the most casual PC user. The CE version of the operating system enables rapid processing of inputs and “real time” output of line tension information and high tension alarms. Configured to run a real-time data logging and trending display application, line tension data is collected as line tension changes at intervals as fast as 50ms, time/date stamped and continuously stored to internal memory. Accessible trough the high-resolution color LCD touch screen interface, tension is clearly displayed on screen as a bar graph and tension value. A “Tension Trending” screen is selected for on line historical graphing or detailed look at any of the most recent 300,000 tension readings in memory. In addition, calculated data based on the real time tension data is stored for each job and for the life of the wire rope and winch.

The advanced, custom software application at the heart of the Integrated Winch Display-Line Monitor System is developed with the winch operator in mind. The monitoring software includes a hierarchy of menu screens for monitoring and changing winch working parameters, checking the status of components, or controlling the winch, should the need ever arise. The touch screen feature makes it easy to access the variable frequency drive directly from the display itself for diagnostics or programming. An onboard Internet connection means that these tasks may be performed remotely. A “Drive Parameters” menu includes raised “push buttons” that pop up an entry screen with numerical values that can be changed to suit planned service operations. A “Manual Mode” presents the operator a graphic wheel house panel on the LCD and the touch sensitive screen is the interface providing winch controllability without touching the standard wheel house controls.
